    Bread 柔和的流行搖滾風 mellow pop rock 是 70 年代早期adult contemporary 「當代成人」音樂的典範。 在吉他手兼作曲人 David Gates 的帶領下，Bread 的核心成員由專業錄音室的樂手組成，他們在1969 年為Elektra 唱片公司製作第一張專輯之前，他們一直以民謠搖滾樂隊 Pleasure Faire 之名工作。他們的第二張專輯為他們贏得了第一張金唱片，“Make It With You”是1970 年夏天的熱門歌曲。 接著他們的暢銷曲有“It Don't Matter to Me”(#10, 1970)、“If”(#4, 1971)、“Baby, I'm-a Want You” (# 3, 1971)、“Everything I Own”( #5, 1972）和“Guitar Man”（#11,1972）...，這種不停的推出暢銷曲狀況，一直持續到樂團於1973 年解散。但是因為 David Gates 個人推出的“Never Let Her Go”獲得第5名（1975 年）和 “Goodbye Girl” 獲得第15名（1978 年），Bread 於1976 年底重組，推出第七張專輯和單曲“Lost Without Your Love”（1977 年#9），然後再次解散。David Gates 和吉他手James Griffin 圍繞團名 Bread 的權利展開的法律鬥爭，從70 年代末一直持續到1984 年，在此期間，法官禁止該樂團錄唱片、表演或收取版稅，直到案件得到解決。1994 年，Gates 才發行了他的13 年來的第一張專輯。

    David Gates、James Griffin、Mike Botts 和Larry Knechtel 於 1997 年復出做Bread 合唱團25週年紀念巡演。
