"The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde"
"Billy Don't Be A Hero" "The Night Chicago Died" 及 "Daddy
Don't You Walk So Fast"這些1960與1970年代暢銷曲的作詞者Peter Callander二月25日已因心臟病於英國Middlesex郡的Haresfield去世(74歲) 。
前述四首歌"The Ballad Of Bonnie & Clyde"是George Fame1968年第7名的暢銷曲,"Billy
Don't Be A Hero"是1974年Bo Donalson的冠軍曲,"The Night Chicago Died"則是Paper Lace 1974年的冠軍曲,而"Daddy
Don't You Walk So Fast"於1972年由Wayne Newton演唱獲得第4名。
Peter Callander寫的這些歌有共同的特色,可以歸類為Saga敘事歌曲,如Bonnie & Clyde是有名的鴛鴦大盜,"The Night Chicago Died"則提及芝加哥的黑幫老大Al Capone,"Billy Don't Be A Hero"說的是南北戰爭時的一個小兵不聽勸最後戰死沙場的故事,"Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast"則是一小孩要老爸別離家而去…,每一首歌的故事都很精彩。
Peter Callander 1939年出生於英國,除作曲外也有自己的出版公司,並創立音樂版稅組織PRS for Music,他的作品在英國亦曾由Cilla Black、Tom Jones、Cliff Richard,Shirley Bassey與The Tremeloes及其他許多名歌星與合唱團演唱。
唱紅"The
Night Chicago Died"的Paper Lace是一個英國合唱團,且只有這一首Top 40的歌。

My daddy was a cop on the east side of
Chicago
Back in the U.S.A. back in the bad old days
In the heat of a summer night
In the land of the dollar bill
When the town of Chicago died
And they talk about it still
When a man named Al Capone
Tried to make that town his own
And he called his gang to war
With the forces of the law
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!
And the sound of the battle rang
Through the streets of the old east side
'Til the last of the hoodlum gang
Had surrendered up or died
There was shouting in the street
And the sound of running feet
And I asked someone who said
"'Bout a hundred cops are dead!"
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!
I heard my mama cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!
And ther was no sound at all
But the clock upon the wall
Then the door burst open wide
And my daddy stepped inside
And he kissed my mama's face
And he brushed her tears away
The night Chicago died
Na-na na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na
The night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!
The night Chicago died
Na-na na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na
The night Chicago died
Brother what a night it really was
Brother what a fight it really was
Glory be!
The night Chicago died
Na-na na, na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na
The night Chicago died
Brother what a night the people saw
Brother what a fight the people saw
Yes indeed!
