英、美二地龐克開始時的景象完全多樣化，描寫男性、女性、跨性別者、同性戀…。
很多樂團有女團員，也有全女子樂團，很清楚的，女性出現於龐克的現象並非開明或仁慈的結果，女性已經進入次文化，她們幫忙建構龐克，她們付出的比龐克給的還多。在龐克圈內的女人可以表達她們個人的獨立性及發出怨氣，龐克給她們力量團結一致。
龐克帶來女子樂團的出現，在英國的有Siouxsie and Banshees「蘇西與女妖」樂團、X Ray Spex「X光機」樂團、the Slits「裂縫」樂團及the Raincoats「雨衣」樂團，同時在美國的女子樂團也是龐克發展中的主力。龐克缺乏技術專家，很多未經訓練的女樂手、作曲人、設計者，以前都被拒在門外。舊金山龐克樂團the Nuns「修女」的Jennifer Miro珍妮佛米洛說，剛開始有些女性團員，後來都變成男的、反女性的，女孩子都不去聽龐克音樂了，因為怕出事。這種現象不只在美西，連紐約和華盛頓都有影響。
1980年代有很多女龐克樂團走紅，他們是Bratmobil「小鬼石油」、Bikini Kill「比基尼弄死」、Calamity Jane「災難珍妮」、Heavens to Betsy「以貝琪之名」、Huggy Bear「可愛熊」、Tribe8「8族」、Cunts with
Attitude「妓女心態」及Team Dresch「傑氏隊」，雖然她們大多在太平洋西北岸活動，但和Riot Grrrl「騷亂女子」樂團一樣，女龐克並無地域之限。
前面提到的這些龐克團體絕大多數在排行榜上都沒有出現，這是龐克發展中的自然現象，唯一例外的是Siouxsie and Banshees這個樂評人定位為前衛龐克、後龐克的樂團，他們在Billboard Hot 100排行榜有一首1991年獲得第23名的歌Kiss Them For Me，此曲也獲得另類搖滾排行榜第5名，收錄在他們1991年的專輯Superstition當中。
Siouxsie and Banshees的主唱是Siouxsie Sioux(Susan Ballion) 她與貝斯手Steve Severin (Steven Bailey) 1976年於倫敦組成該團，第一張專輯The Scream〈吶喊〉於1978年在第一首單曲“Hong Kong Garden”「香港花園」一夜成名後推出，但是上述早期的龐克專輯和單曲在美國都沒有發行。
