  Carly Simon表示“ they were clouds in my coffee “這句子的構想來自有一次搭飛機的時候，她的一位工作夥伴Billy Mernit注意到白雲反射在她的咖啡上，告訴她"look at the clouds in your coffee"「看看妳咖啡裡的雲」，這句話後來被套用到她寫的"You're So Vain"的歌詞裡。

  Carly Simon進一步加以說明 : 我咖啡裡的雲朵是生活和愛情中令人困惑的一面，你無法看穿，但似乎很誘人。就像海市蜃樓變成了乾涸的土地。也許在咖啡杯底部你可以讀到一些東西  (就如茶葉或咖啡粉) ，就是這樣。就我自己而言，我很困惑，但這首歌很棒，這神秘的歌詞背後有個故事。

  Carly Simon出生於紐約曼哈坦，父親是一位出版商，原為民歌二重唱The Simon Sisters成員，1972-1983年與James Taylor曾結過婚，她的暢銷曲很多，是1970年代的紅歌星，她在排行榜上名次最好的歌就是這一首1972年獲得過三週排行榜冠軍的"You're So Vain"。
