  披頭四的團員John Lennon說：「我認為“In My Life”是我的第一首真正的、重要的作品，」。「在那之前，其它的歌都是油嘴滑舌、隨意的。」這首民謠風的曲子反映了披頭四樂團在《Rubber Soul》中的嚴肅轉變，它特別是對一位記者的挑戰，該記者曾提問：「你為什麼不寫一些關於你生活的歌曲」？

    起初歌詞把 Lennon 設想在利物浦的一輛公共汽車上，他說「這是“What I Did on My Holidays Bus Trip”歌曲中最無聊的一段。」 於是他就放鬆自己，寫出了一首他在披頭四之前的生活的頌歌。獨特的「大鍵琴」其實是 George Martin 演奏的電子鋼琴。

這首歌的歌詞寫得很好，是一首對如煙往事的讚歌。

John Lennon 寫這首歌時只有25歲，沒想到他40歲時就遭槍殺而去世。
