    Terry Kath 從未被 Chicago 解僱。 Kath 是他們最初的主唱吉他手之一，在樂團期間為該團創作或共同創作了多首歌曲，並在其中的幾首歌曲中擔任主唱。但Kath 後來因為1978年的 一場悲劇收場。

    1978 年1 月23 日，Kath在一個聚會上把玩一把左輪手槍，但為了平息周圍朋友的恐懼，他說這把手槍沒有上膛。他把槍指著自己的頭，扣動了扳機，但遺憾的是槍已經上膛，子彈射出，Kath當場斃命。

    Kath 一直在考慮做一個副業，並寫了一些歌曲，但在他去世時還沒有任何結果。Chicago 的成員都對他的去世深感悲痛 ，但樂團仍然在一起並繼續錄歌和巡迴演出。但樂團發生了變化，失去了一位重要的原始成員。

    Chicago 被樂評人定位為 Pop/Rock/Adult Contemporary 流行/搖滾/成人當代樂團，於芝加哥成軍時名叫 The Big Thing，1969年轉到洛杉磯時改名Chicago Transit Authority 簡稱Chicago，除了 Terry Kath（吉他手）之外，Peter Cetera （貝斯手）Robert Lamm（鍵琴手）也擔任主唱。

    Peter Cetera 於1985年離開Chicago 去從事個人的歌唱事業，以一首電影The Karate Kid Part II 《小子難纏 II》插曲Glory Of Love 獲得2周排行榜冠軍，是他個人成績最好的一首歌。而 1978 年1 月23 日Terry Kath 意外喪生之前Chicago 樂團成績最好的一首歌是也獲得2周排行榜冠軍的 If You Leave Me Now。
