  發源自美國深南方的藍調音樂演變至搖滾樂興起的1960年代,已有比較電子化的伴奏,名稱也改稱 R&B (rhythm & blues)。 (Gladys Knight & ThePips)即是其中的佼佼者。

  來自喬治亞州亞特蘭大的節奏藍調家族組合 (Gladys Knight & The Pips)：團員（Gladys Knight，1944年5月28日出生）、她的哥哥 (Merald “Bubba” Knight)、妹妹 (Brenda) 以及表兄 (Wiliam Guest) 和 (Elea Guest)。樂團以他們的經紀人、表兄 (James “Pip” Woods) 的名字命名為“Pips”。

  該樂團於1958年首次和布倫瑞克唱片公司(Brunswick)簽約。1959年 Brenda 和Elea 分別被表兄 Edward Patte和 Langston George 取代。 1962年，Langston 離開樂團，此後該團一直保持四人組合的形式。
