在英國，（Careless Whisper）以 George 的個人單曲形式發行。在美國，Wham! 終於在 1984 年 12 月憑藉他們的第一首 冠軍單曲〈Careless Whisper〉一舉成名。
這首歌以(Wham! Featuring George Michael)的名義發行，是 1984 年 12 月 22 日當周Billboard Hot 100單曲榜上排名最高的新歌。首周排名第 37 位，僅用了八週時間就成為該組合在美國的第二首冠軍單曲。
「我們知道這首歌與我們之前的作品風格迥異，所以才把它作為一首個人單曲發行，」邁克爾告訴 Morden。 「收錄這首歌是為了表明樂隊不會解散，也是為了促進唱片銷量。」
當他們成為首支受邀在長城以東演出的西方主流搖滾樂團時，Wham樂團的國際地位迅速提升。邀請函來自中國青年聯合會和廣州文化部。

在〈Careless Whisper〉之後：在英國，他們憑藉〈Freedom〉再次登上榜首，並在1984年12月憑藉節日歌曲〈Last Christmas〉攀升至第二名。這首節日歌曲最終被Band Aid的〈Do They Know Its Christmas?〉擋在了榜首之外，後者是英國最初的慈善義賣歌曲，旨在為非洲飢民籌款 。 George是這首單曲的演唱者之一。
在美國，Wham樂團繼〈Careless Whisper〉之後又以另一首冠軍單曲〈Everything She Wants〉登頂榜首 。所有這些成功是否影響了威猛樂團？有人認為，樂團甚至在走紅之前就顯得傲慢自大、過於自信。
