Paul Young-Everytime You Go Away

    今天來回味一首經典歌曲〈Everytime You Go Away〉。

    1981年Daryl Hall和John Oates的首張自製專輯「聲音」《Voices》誕生了一首冠軍單曲〈Kiss on My List〉。四年零三個月後這張專輯中的另一首歌曲〈Everytime You Go Away〉以英國流行搖滾歌手Paul Young的翻唱版本登上Billboard Hot 100 排行榜冠軍。

    這是Young在美國的第一首冠軍單曲；在此之前，他已經以翻唱 Marvin Gaye的〈Wherever I Lay My Hat (That's My Home)〉登頂英國排行榜。事實上，他在美國排行榜上的前五首單曲都是翻唱作品：除了Daryl Hall 及Marvin Gaye的歌曲外，他還翻唱了Jack Lee的〈Come Back and Stay〉、John Hurley和Ronnie wilkins 的〈Love of the Common People〉及Elliot Randall 的〈T'm Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down〉。這首歌後來成為 Ann Peebles的 R&B暢銷曲。

     Daryl Hall 或許會不高興地讀到（Merle Ginsberg）在《滾石》（Rolling Stone）雜誌上對Paul Young的採訪，採訪中Young說道：「我從未翻唱過一首我認為已經有了權威版本的歌」。「在Paul Young翻唱之前，我從未想過這首歌還有其他的演繹方式，」霍爾說道:「我當時只是想創作一首福音/靈魂樂風格的歌曲；這就是我當時的想法。聽到他們的製作版本，我真的非常驚訝，因為它保留了原曲的元素，但又使其商業化，聽起來像一首流行歌曲。」 

     Paul Antony Young於1956年1月17日出生於英國。他14歲開始學習鋼琴。兩年後，他進入父親工作的汽車製造廠工作，並在業餘時間為當地樂隊演奏貝斯。1978年，他加入了 Streetband樂隊，該樂隊與Logo唱片公司簽約，並憑藉一首名為“Tbast”的另類歌曲在英國排行榜上取得了第18名的好成績。

    「當時我努力保持我的英國口音，儘管我一直在聽很多靈魂樂。」 「結果相當怪異，」Young在《新聞周刊》上說道。

    Young加入的下一支樂團更受歡迎，儘管他們從未有過打入排行榜的單曲。 Q-Tips樂隊由八名成員組成，在三年半的時間裡舉辦了超過100場演出。

    英國（CBS Records）的A&R主管（Muff Winwood)，很喜歡這個樂隊，但認為他們沒有商業潛力。 1981年底，他與Young簽下了一份個人合約。「他們對我的發展方向感到困惑，」Young告訴《Hiburn》雜誌，「我想他們當時是想把我推向流行、輕快的靈魂樂方向。」

    Young與Q-Tips樂團的鍵盤手 Ian Kewley合作，為他的首張專輯《No Parlez》創作了兩首原創歌曲。其餘歌曲均為翻唱作品。 〈Wherever I Lay My Hat〉在美國未能複製在英國的成功。這首單曲在1983年10月最高排名僅第70名。「我期望這張專輯在美國也能像在歐洲一樣成功，」Young在《滾石》雜誌上說道。「但事與願違，我感到很迷茫，這開始讓我感到沮喪。」在《新聞周刊》上，Young表示：「對我來說，讓美國知道我的作品是優秀的，這一點尤為重要，因為我90%的音樂靈感都來自美國。」

  〈Everytime You Go Away〉讓美國知道保羅楊的作品是優秀的。1985年夏天結束時，Paul與Daryl Hall在紐約的舞台上合作，共同演繹了這首他們的冠軍單曲。
